Editorials
I've had an increasing number of requests to commit the content of my masterclasses and workshops to written format. My views and suggestions are gained from personal experience, listening to ideas and opinions from brass players in different fields of performance and reading authoritative publications on the art of brass playing. My comments will hopefully act as a reference point for players wishing to experiment with fresh approaches to the basics of playing.
and Workshop Notes'Back to Basics' classes, which I use as a keystone in all levels of tuition, underline the importance of control and awareness of the elements of brass playing. We should never lose sight of the fundamentals of our art.
In the next three papers I will cover the foundations of playing. These can easily be segmented into the following categories; breathing; articulation and production; flexibility and range.
BreathingIn my first paper I discuss the importance of the airstream and how we can develop the ability to supply the required amount to our instrument
Articulation and Production
My second paper outlines the role of the tongue and how it corresponds with our airstream. Hopefully this article will help players who suffer from poor production and attack.
Flexibility and Range
The third and final paper discusses my approach to flexibility and rehearsal techniques.I do hope that these brief articles will help brass players. It would be great to hear your comments and ideas - it is a poor teacher who stops learning!
