Cornwall Young Musician 2000

I was recently involved in a series of events which took place in the 'Hall for Cornwall' in the picturesque city of Truro. The Cornwall Young Musician 2000 competition was open to all categories of instrument and was held over three days. Each entrant had to perform a 15 minute recital which acted as a qualifying round for the grand final. Over 21 delegates entered the competition and the final winner was pianist Simon Galfe who played Rachmaninov's Prelude in C sharp minor.

The event was accompanied by a series of workshops; Simon Bates gave a jazz workshop to the County Youth Jazz Orchestra, Mike Mower gave a fabulous improvisation class to the flute delegates and I was fortunate to give a workshop for the lower brass of the County Youth Band.

The weekends activities were completed with a gala concert given by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band cond. Chris North. I featured Langford's Rhapsody for Trombone and Bill Geldard's fabulous arrangement of Stardust by Hoagy Carmichael.

The weekend was a great success and it was terrific to see such a high standard of performance from such young musicians. Long may it continue.
