Harrogate Band Gala Concert

Current North of England Champions The Harrogate Band recently organised a fund raising event for their trip to the National Brass Band Championships in London. The event took the form of a Gala Concert held in the magnificent surroundings of Ripon Cathedral in North Yorkshire. I was fortunate to be invited as guest soloist and was involved in a fabulous evening of music making.

The band, under conductor David Lancaster, featured a varied selection of works which appealed to the capacity audience; the march 'The Champions', 'Abstractions' by Torstein Aagaard-Neilsen, 'Oklahoma', 'Just as I am' by the late Harrogate resident Wilfred Heaton and a fine arrangement of 'Bolero' by conductor David Lancaster.

As soloist I featured a number of varied works; 'Dick Turpin's Ride to York' by Rodney Newton, an unaccompanied transcription of Gregorian Chant from Klosterneuberg, 'All I ask of You' arr. by Chris Mowat, 'Blue John' by Peter Kneale and the ever popular 'Stardust' by Hoagy Carmichael.

This was the second annual gala concert and proved to be another success, I wish David and the band best wishes and good luck for their forthcoming title attempt.
